A Belgian serviceman was seriously injured during military exercises at the Pabrade training ground in Lithuania - he was urgently transported to a medical facility in Vilnius.
This was reported by LRT, citing a statement from representatives of the Lithuanian army. "The soldier's condition is serious; he has sustained multiple injuries, and efforts are being made to save his life," the statement said.
It is noted that the Belgian military was injured during live-fire exercises with mortars conducted by soldiers from his country stationed in Lithuania. First aid was provided to the soldier on site.
The incident was responded to by Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė - she wished strength to the relatives of the injured soldier, to Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, and to the entire Belgian people.
"We are deeply grateful to this warrior for his service and dedication. Lithuania will provide all necessary medical assistance at the highest level, and our institutions are closely working with representatives from Belgium regarding further steps," she stated.
Lithuanian Minister of National Defense Arvydas Anušauskas also expressed condolences to the family and loved ones of the injured Belgian serviceman.
Belgian troops have been regularly stationed in Lithuania since 2017 as part of an international battalion of allies under German command.
