The Internal Security Bureau (ISB) is the police within the police, tasked with finding the bad apples in the friendly herd of the Ministry of the Interior.
Recently, the Internal Security Bureau (ISB) reported another success in its work. Specifically, a case has been sent for the initiation of criminal prosecution against a police officer who, exceeding his official powers, used violence against a person, mistakenly believing him to be a bicycle thief.
The officer of the State Police of Latvia is proposed to be held criminally liable for exceeding official powers related to violence, and another private individual for intentionally causing bodily harm.
During the pre-trial investigation, the ISB found that the State Police officer, while off duty, identified himself as a police officer at the time of the incident and exceeded his official powers by using violence against a private individual whom he mistakenly suspected of stealing a bicycle.
It was also established that another private individual was involved in the incident, who, seeing the police officer's attempt to put handcuffs on the resisting person, caused him moderate bodily harm.
