In Zasulauks, two young men caused a conflict in a kebab shop on Monday evening after one of them placed a jacket on a radiator, causing its material to melt from the heat, the police report.
While the staff tried to resolve the situation — even offering 15 kebabs as compensation — the young men took advantage of the moment when an employee briefly went to the kitchen, placed the damaged jacket on the cash register, and stole it, making off with approximately 360 euros. Later, the cash register was found nearby the scene, but it was already empty, and the police soon identified and detained both young men. A criminal case has been initiated regarding the incident, and the detainees have been subjected to a preventive measure not related to imprisonment.
Case Details
On November 25, shortly after 8:00 PM, employees of the Riga Regional Department of the State Police, Pardaugava Division, received information about the theft of a cash register from a kebab shop in Zasulauks. Upon arriving at the scene, the police learned that two young men had entered the establishment, and one of them had placed his jacket on a radiator, causing it to melt from the heat. The young men approached the staff and began to argue.
The kebab shop employees offered 15 kebabs as compensation; however, at the moment when an employee briefly went to the kitchen, the young men seized the opportunity and stole the cash register. After placing the damaged jacket on the register, they quickly left the establishment.
Nearby the scene, the police discovered the abandoned cash register, but it was empty. Before the theft, it contained about 360 euros. The police promptly identified possible suspects and, together with the Riga Municipal Police, detained the two young men. They had already spent the money from the cash register.
The detainees were born in 2005 and 2006 and had not previously come to the attention of the police. They have been assigned a preventive measure not related to imprisonment.
A criminal case has been initiated under the first part of Article 180 of the Criminal Law — for theft in a small amount. Such a crime is punishable by imprisonment for up to one year, or short-term imprisonment, or probation supervision, or community service, or a monetary fine.
The State Police reminds that no person is considered guilty until their guilt in committing a crime is proven in accordance with the law.
