Thefts from cars remain a common occurrence in the districts of Riga. A resident of Purvciems, heading from her home to her car, discovered that her vehicle had been vandalized. The glass was broken, and personal belongings were missing from the cabin. The woman called the police, but the apprehension of the thieves is proceeding slowly, so the victim is seeking help from the viewers of the Degpunktā program (TV3).
A broken window of a "Volvo," personal belongings stolen — this is the scene the car owner encountered on a weekday evening. At first, she didn’t even realize what had happened.
"I was selling items, went to the car for my jacket, and was talking on the phone. I suspected nothing at all. Because the window on the side where the path to the yard is — I live in this house — looked completely clean from the outside. And then I approached — I see, the window is broken, and there’s a stone lying nearby, which, apparently, was used to break it."
The victim said she reacted hysterically. She had recently moved into this apartment, and there had been no incidents before. "I always parked the car in the same spot, and now — I parked it, and that’s it," says the young woman.
While waiting for the police to arrive, the woman met a neighbor. He informed her that the glass in the car had been broken at night and that the vehicle had been left in that condition all day.
Together with the janitor, they tried to find the car owner, but to no avail. Not knowing all the circumstances, they decided not to call the police.
At the scene, shards of glass and an unusually large stone, uncharacteristic for the yard, could be seen. The victim and other neighbors are convinced that it was this stone that broke the window.
The stone was thrown twice — first, it hit the body of the car, and only on the second attempt did it manage to break the glass. The woman suspects that the thief had planned the nighttime raid in advance and even partially acknowledges her fault in what happened.
"It turns out that from time to time — well, this is my mistake — I left things in the car, and apparently, someone noticed while I left the car under the streetlight that there were items in the cabin. He waited until it was in a vulnerable place, where there would be no witnesses, and took advantage of the moment," the car owner is sure.
The woman had two jackets and a set of manicure tools stolen. The total damage exceeded the minimum wage in Latvia — 740 euros, so the police initiated a criminal case. The woman does not regret spending money on new items, repairing the door, and installing glass — what upsets her the most is the very fact of what happened.
"It’s frustrating that you live in a good mood, suspecting nothing. And someone just thought it would be a good idea to take these things," she says in shock. "I don’t understand: if a man stole this, why would he want a box of manicure supplies?"
The owner added that the car alarm did not go off at the time of the theft, but the car is insured. If you have seen a suspicious person rummaging around cars late at night in recent days, or if you have surveillance footage from Anna Brigadere Street, please report it to the police at 112.
