The court has classified the case of former minister Segliņš

The Riga City Court will henceforth consider the criminal case against former minister Maris Segliņš for refusing to undergo an alcohol test in closed court sessions, the court informed the LETA agency.

The next hearing is scheduled for February 27, 2026, at 11:00.

Without naming the accused, the prosecutor's office confirmed to the LETA agency that in July 2024, the accused was driving a "Mercedes Benz" on Priedeines Street towards Zolitūdes Street in Riga. The driver refused to undergo a medical examination to determine the concentration of alcohol in the blood.

The Criminal Law provides for imprisonment of up to one year, probation supervision, and a five-year driving ban for a driver's refusal to undergo a breathalyzer test or blood test for alcohol.

Segliņš is a former member and chairman of the now-defunct People's Party. Over the years, he held the positions of Minister of the Interior and Minister of Justice in several governments, and was also a deputy in several convocations of the Saeima. In parliament, he chaired the Legal Commission and the National Security Commission.

Segliņš has not been involved in active politics for several years.
