Due to the illness of one of the defendants, the Riga District Court has postponed until March 9, 2026, the consideration of the appeal by former high-ranking officer of the Committee for State Security (KGB) Andris Strautmanis against the verdict of the Riga District Court, which sentenced him to a conditional prison term for transferring classified information to former Saeima deputy Janis Adamsons, who is accused of espionage, reports the LETA agency.
The district court is considering the case in closed hearings.
Strautmanis is accused of inciting the disclosure of classified information. A total of ten such criminal episodes were recorded, committed between 2015 and 2018. All the information obtained was passed by Strautmanis to Adamsons. In addition, he has been charged with illegal possession of firearms, their essential parts, and ammunition.
Judge Baiba Abele of the Riga District Court examined the case in closed sessions and found Strautmanis guilty on all ten counts of incitement, sentencing him to one and a half years of conditional imprisonment with the same probation period. If he serves actual time, the period of Strautmanis's detention from June 10 to August 13, 2021, will be counted.
For the illegal possession of firearms, their essential parts, and ammunition, Strautmanis was fined an amount equivalent to ten minimum monthly salaries, which is 7000 euros.
Strautmanis does not admit his guilt.
The charges against Strautmanis are closely related to the criminal case in which former Saeima deputy Adamsons is accused of espionage in favor of Russian special services, minor fraud, as well as possession of nearly 100 live cartridges without the appropriate permit at his home in Suntaži. His co-defendant, Gennady Silonov, is accused of espionage on behalf of the Russian special services.
Adamsons and Silonov do not admit their guilt; however, in November of last year, the Riga City Court found them guilty. Adamsons was sentenced to eight years and six months of imprisonment, while Silonov received seven years and six months. Four appeals have been filed against the first-instance court's verdict, and the case is currently being reviewed in the Riga District Court on appeal.
