Yevgeny went to visit, but never returned home. His relatives searched for him for a whole week until he was finally found on Saturday morning — fortunately, alive, reports Degpunktā.
“We were going back and forth, headed towards Riga, thinking maybe he lost his ticket, and we were misled. But now we had information that he seemed to be here in Jaunmarupe. We had to wait two days until we were informed that the call was from here,” Yevgeny’s sister recounted at the time.
The family also involved the K-9 canine service in the search; dogs were used to look for Yevgeny, and with the help of video cameras, it was established that the man was seen near Jurmala.
The family and volunteers began intensive searches in the forested area near the station. After two days of almost continuous searching, filled with hope, Yevgeny was found alive on Saturday afternoon. Most likely, he boarded the wrong train that went in the opposite direction, got off at the Kudra station, and continued his journey home on foot. His phone died, so the elderly man decided to continue his journey the next day and spend the night under the open sky near Lake Aklais.
He may not have known that the lake is located on the territory of an old swamp, and that it is dangerous to go there off-road. Not seeing a path, he took a fateful step, fell into a deep ditch, and could no longer get out on his own. He spent six nights under the open sky, sleeping on the cold ground…
