Mother and her partner sentenced to several years in prison for beating a child 0 10

The child's mother has been found guilty of cruel and violent treatment of a minor and sentenced to 4 years and 8 months in prison, followed by two years of probation supervision. Her partner was convicted of intentionally causing moderate bodily harm to a person in a helpless state and received a sentence of 4 years and 10 months of imprisonment with two years of probation supervision.

The sentence imposed on both is close to the maximum provided by criminal law for the crimes they committed, namely, imprisonment for up to five years.

The prosecutor justified the request for such a severe punishment by the particularly close relationship between the victim and the perpetrators of the violence, as well as the systematic nature of the actions. All violence and cruel treatment of the victim occurred over a long period without providing medical assistance to reduce or eliminate the consequences caused.

When determining the punishment, the harm caused to the child was also taken into account, namely the threat to his mental and physical health. Due to the various types and severity of bodily harm inflicted on the victim, as well as the psychological suffering, the child required long-term medical care in a healthcare facility and an extended rehabilitation process.

The prosecutor of the Riga Eastern Prosecutor's Office considered the punishment to be fair and proportional and does not plan to appeal. Information about possible appeals from other participants in the process has not yet been received.
