As a result of an accident in the Rokiskis district in northern Lithuania on Wednesday evening, a citizen of Latvia died, and another person, presumably a citizen of Afghanistan, was injured, reported the law enforcement agencies of Lithuania.
The State Border Guard Service of Lithuania believes that the incident is related to the transportation of migrants from Latvia, and an investigation has been initiated, reported border service advisor Gedrius Mishutis.
The police called border guards to the scene, who, with the help of service dogs, searched the surroundings but found no suspicious individuals.
According to the Lithuanian police, at 19:44, a "Volvo V40" was spotted in a pond near the Juodupė-Alekniškis road. It is presumed that it went off the road and overturned.
The body of a Latvian citizen born in 1997 was found in the pond.
The identity of the victim has not been established, but it is assumed that he is a citizen of Afghanistan. He was taken to a hospital in Panevėžys.
The Lithuanian police continue to investigate the incident.
