Two Police Employees Stand Trial for Fake Raids

The Riga District Court issued a verdict in the criminal case against the now former State Police employees Lena Keine-Kaštaljān and Jana Stepense, who were accused of document forgery, Latvijas Avīze reports.

The court found them guilty and imposed a monetary fine, but the verdict has not yet come into effect.

The criminal proceedings began seven years ago. Among the defendants, Lena Keine-Kaštaljān is the most widely known, having frequently appeared on the television show "Degpunktā," commenting on various incidents. Her emotional manner of communication contrasted with the usual restraint of officials, making her a sort of "police star." At that time, she held the position of head of the criminal police department in the Kurzeme precinct of Riga.

In 2017, the leadership of the State Police transferred her to the Salaspils precinct. While serving as the head of the criminal police department of this precinct, Keine-Kaštaljān and inspector Jana Stepense agreed to organize fake raids and prepare false official reports. According to the indictment, Keine-Kaštaljān organized these raids primarily at night, when police work is paid at double the rate.

The prosecution believes that both employees forged documents for selfish reasons - to increase their pay and the salaries of their colleagues. The Internal Security Bureau found during the investigation that at least six such raids did not take place. Three police officers confirmed in court that they did not participate in such raids, although their names were listed in the reports.
