144 km/h instead of 50: a reckless driver in Riga was deprived of their license for a year and fined 1400 euros

During routine traffic monitoring in various areas of Riga on October 18, State Police officers recorded significant speeding violations. Three drivers were banned from using their driving licenses, while two others had their right to operate a vehicle completely revoked. One of the violators was driving in a populated area at a speed of 144 km/h in a zone where 50 km/h is permitted.

On the evening of October 18, employees of the Special Department of the Road Traffic Safety Directorate of the State Police monitored compliance with traffic rules in the vicinity of Krasta and Ziepniekkalna streets in Riga, where numerous cases of gross speeding were recorded. Violators were traveling at speeds ranging from 110 to 144 km/h.

Around six in the evening, police officers stopped a driver of a BMW who was driving on the Southern Bridge towards Bauskas Street at a speed of 137 km/h in a zone where 70 km/h is permitted. The violator was fined 1040 euros and had their driving license revoked for nine months.

Nearby, on Ziepniekkalna Street, another BMW driver was stopped, who was traveling at a speed of 110 km/h in a zone where 50 km/h is permitted. They were also fined and banned from using their driving license for six months.

Later, on the Southern Bridge, this time heading towards Krasta Street, a driver of a Volvo was stopped while driving at a speed of 128 km/h in a zone where 70 km/h is permitted. They were fined and temporarily banned from using their license for six months.

Around ten in the evening, on Krasta Street, where the maximum permitted speed is 50 km/h, police recorded a BMW traveling at a speed of 144 km/h. The driver was fined 1400 euros and deprived of their license for 12 months.

At the very end of the workday, police officers also stopped a BMW driver who was traveling at a speed of 131 km/h in a zone where 70 km/h is permitted. They were fined and banned from using their driving license for six months.

The State Police reminds that they regularly monitor compliance with traffic rules to prevent dangerous maneuvers and speeding, as well as to remind every driver: the risk associated with speeding does not justify the threat to one's own life and the safety of others.
