Somali National Detained at Riga Airport with Fake Irish ID Card

On Wednesday, Latvian border guards detained a citizen of Somalia at Riga Airport with a fake Irish identification card, the State Border Guard reported to the LETA agency.

During immigration control at the border checkpoint of Riga International Airport, a citizen of Somalia was identified who presented border guards with a fake Irish identification card. A criminal case has been initiated for the use of a counterfeit document and concealment of identity.

In the past 24 hours, entry into Latvia has been denied to 15 foreigners at border checkpoints, and 73 attempts of illegal entry into Latvia, and consequently into the European Union, have been prevented at the 'green' border with Belarus.

In total, this year, 10,313 attempts of illegal border crossing have been thwarted, and for humanitarian reasons, 25 individuals have been accepted into Latvia.

Due to the ongoing flow of illegal migrants from Belarus, the government has extended the enhanced control regime at the Latvian-Belarusian border until December 31 of this year.

Last year, 5,388 attempts of illegal border crossing were prevented, and 26 individuals were allowed to remain in Latvia.
