At the same time, passenger traffic and the volume of freight transportation on China's railways showed steady growth from January to May this year. Investments in fixed assets in the country's railway sector also increased, according to data released by the China State Railway Administration (CSRA).
According to the agency's statistics, the total volume of freight railway transportation in the first five months of this year reached 2.19 billion tons, which is 3.1 percent more than in the same period last year, while the freight turnover amounted to 1.56 trillion ton-kilometers, which is 6.2 percent more year-on-year.
During the reporting period, the total volume of passenger railway transportation across the country was 1.97 billion person-times, an increase of 5.7 percent compared to the same period last year.
The total volume of investments in fixed assets in China's railway sector during the specified period amounted to 248.5 billion yuan (approximately 36.5 billion USD), which is 2.6 percent more year-on-year. Meanwhile, the construction of the railway network continued to progress steadily.
As stated by an official representative of the administration, the steady growth of passenger traffic and freight transportation on the railways, combined with the systematic development of railway construction, contributes to socio-economic development.
