In the ports of Latvia, 12.973 million tons of cargo were handled in the first five months of this year, which is 13.6% less than in the same period last year, according to information from the Ministry of Transport.
The largest volume of cargo handled in the ports of Latvia in the first five months of this year was bulk cargo - 5.623 million tons, which is 13.7% less than in the same period last year.
This includes 1.922 million tons of grain and grain products (-18.3%), 1.043 million tons of wood chips (-8.5%), 205,900 tons of chemical bulk cargo (+2%), and 23,900 tons of coal (22.8 times less).
General cargo handled in the ports of Latvia in the first five months of this year amounted to 5.001 million tons (-10.3%), including container cargo - 1.958 million tons (-6.3%), timber - 1.523 million tons (-25.8%), and roll on/roll off (ro-ro) cargo - 1.391 million tons, which is 3.3% more.
Liquid cargo handled in the ports of Latvia in the first five months of this year was 2.348 million tons, which is 19.6% less than in the same period last year.
The majority of liquid cargo consisted of petroleum products - 2.002 million tons, which is 24% less than in the same period last year.
In terms of cargo volume, the leading position in the first five months of this year was still held by the Port of Riga, where 6.686 million tons were handled, which is 3.6% less than in the same period last year.
Next is the Port of Ventspils, where the cargo turnover in the first five months of this year amounted to 2.947 million tons (-26.3%), and in third place is the Port of Liepaja with 2.45 million tons (-16.1%).
Among the small ports of Latvia, the highest cargo turnover in the first five months of this year was at the Skulte Port - 428,500 tons, which is 21.7% less than in the first five months of 2025, followed by the Mersrags Port with 256,300 tons of cargo (-23.3%), and the Salacgriva Port with 170,600 tons (-31%).
Overall, in the small ports of Latvia, 889,400 tons of cargo were handled in the first five months of 2026, which is 22.9% less than in the first five months of 2025.
It has already been reported that in the ports of Latvia last year, 34.281 million tons of cargo were handled, which is 4.8% less than in 2024.
