China reacted strongly to the EU's plans to protect industry, promising retaliatory measures

On Monday, Beijing expressed sharp discontent with the European Union's initiatives aimed at shielding key sectors of the economy from Chinese competition and stated its readiness to take retaliatory actions if these measures are implemented.

On Monday, China sharply criticized the European Union's plans aimed at protecting strategically important sectors from Chinese competition. Beijing warned that if these measures were implemented, retaliatory steps would be taken.

According to the rules proposed by the European Union, titled "Made in Europe," companies seeking government funding in key sectors such as automotive, green technologies, and metallurgy will have to meet strict requirements regarding the share of local components. In response, Beijing firmly condemned the EU initiative on Monday, promising to take countermeasures immediately if it comes into effect.

China's Ministry of Commerce reported that it had sent official comments to the European Commission as early as Friday. These expressed Beijing's "serious concern" about the law, which the Chinese side characterized as "systemic discrimination."

The Chinese ministry issued a clear warning: "If the EU... continues to promote this legislation and thereby harms the interests of Chinese companies, China will have no choice but to take countermeasures to resolutely protect the legitimate rights and interests of its enterprises."

Back in March, the European Union introduced new "Made in Europe" rules aimed at companies wishing to access government funds in strategically important sectors. These regulations require firms to meet minimum requirements for the share of components produced directly in the EU.

This proposal, which had been delayed for many months due to internal disagreements, is a central element of the European Union's strategy. It aims to restore competitiveness, slow down industrial decline, and prevent mass job losses.
