Incidents at the largest poultry farm have raised concerns in the industry: drones were even used for infiltration

Concerns in the egg production industry in Latvia have been raised by several security incidents — the company SIA "Alūksnes putnu ferma" reported that at least four attempts of illegal infiltration were recorded on its premises in February and March 2026.

Some of these were carried out using drones, which were used both for monitoring security and as a tool in coordinated actions. In some cases, individuals attempted to gain access to production facilities through technological openings intended for chicken manure removal systems, reports tv3.lv.

The chairman of the company's board, Hermanis Dovgijs, emphasizes that such incidents pose serious biosecurity risks: uncontrolled access to poultry facilities can facilitate the spread of infections and have serious consequences for the entire industry.

The company has already contacted law enforcement — some of the individuals involved have been identified, and several people have been temporarily detained. The investigation is ongoing, and measures are being taken to identify all participants in the incidents.

The situation is exacerbated by the fact that the events coincide with a public campaign against the company conducted by the organization "Dzīvnieku brīvība". According to the company, the methods used raise questions regarding their legality and compliance with the stated goals of animal protection.

At the same time, industry representatives, including Guntis Gutmanis from the Council of Agricultural Organizations, emphasize that such actions deserve condemnation and may negatively impact the reputation of all non-governmental organizations, as well as raise questions about the use of funds.

The seriousness of the incidents is also highlighted by the Minister of Agriculture, Armands Krauze, noting potential economic losses and impacts on exports.

SIA "Alūksnes putnu ferma", which provides about 45% of egg consumption in Latvia, continues to operate at full capacity while simultaneously enhancing security measures and cooperating with responsible authorities.

The company notes that it remains ready for constructive dialogue but emphasizes that any actions threatening biosecurity are unacceptable.
