JSC "Latvenergo" plans to build a backup spillway at the Pļaviņas Hydroelectric Power Station (HPP) in Aizkraukle, which will provide the ability to lower the water level in the HPP reservoir under various hydrological conditions and additional capacity in the event of maximum possible floods, the LETA agency learned from "Latvenergo."
Information in the Electronic Procurement System indicates that "Latvenergo" has announced a consultation with suppliers for the procurement of "Development of the construction project for the backup spillway of the Pļaviņas Hydroelectric Power Station and author supervision."
The supplier consultation notice states that "Latvenergo" plans to announce the procurement in the first quarter of 2026. The technical documentation for the project is classified information.
The development of the construction project is tentatively scheduled from January 2027 to April 2030, while construction work and author supervision are tentatively planned from January 2031 to December 2035. It is expected that the warranty period for the work will last from December 2035 to November 2040.
"Latvenergo" explains that the project "Construction of the backup spillway of the Pļaviņas Hydroelectric Power Station" is a project of public and state energy security aimed at enhancing the reliability of the existing dam of the Pļaviņas Hydroelectric Power Station while simultaneously increasing the safety of all dams of the Daugava hydroelectric power stations. The construction of the backup spillway will also enhance flood protection in the area of the Pļaviņas Hydroelectric Power Station.
The project includes the construction of a backup spillway at the Pļaviņas Hydroelectric Power Station in Aizkraukle, which will allow for lowering the water level in the reservoir of the Pļaviņas Hydroelectric Power Station under various hydrological conditions and provide additional capacity in the event of maximum possible floods (probability — once in 10,000 years).
According to current construction regulations, a construction project must be developed before the start of construction work — a set of information that includes graphic and textual materials about the construction concept, including the characteristics of the structure or its accessories.
The company notes that the overall timeline for project work is planned until April 2030, while the actual construction work is scheduled for the period from 2031 to 2035. The total cost of the project will be known only after the development of the construction project.
