Latvia aims to develop cooperation with Ghana in agriculture and food processing, stated Latvia's Minister of Foreign Affairs Baiba Braže ("New Unity") after a meeting in Riga with Ghana's Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, LETA reports.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the meeting, the ministers discussed bilateral relations between the countries, opportunities for economic cooperation, security issues in Europe and West Africa, the implementation of development projects, as well as cooperation within the UN and other international organizations.

Braže noted that Latvian enterprises are already offering their products and services in Ghana — trade mainly includes grain crops, products from the milling industry, and electrical equipment. According to her, industries with high added value, such as information and communication technologies and digitalization, as well as "green technologies," are actively developing in Latvia, in which Ghana has expressed interest in cooperation.

"We want to develop cooperation in the field of agriculture and food processing," said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia.

The parties also discussed Russia's war against Ukraine and its impact on the security of European and African countries — including food and energy security. Braže emphasized that the war unleashed by Russia is colonial and imperialistic, and that "Russia grossly disinforms and recruits citizens of other states, including African countries, for the war against Ukraine."

Discussing cooperation in international organizations, Braže highlighted the significance of Ghana's expertise for Latvia as a member of the UN Security Council. According to her, international law, the inadmissibility of changing borders by force, as well as new security challenges are common priorities for both countries.

The Ghanaian minister informed Braže about the current situation and security issues, including the threat of terrorism in West Africa and especially in the Sahel region, which directly affects the security of Europe. The ministers discussed Russia's destabilizing role in the Sahel region.

The parties also discussed development issues, including the significantly increased interest of Latvian project implementers in cooperation with African countries. Latvia shared its experience with Ghana in implementing a project in the agricultural sector last year as part of development cooperation.
