Half a Billion Over the Weekend: 'Zootopia 2' Sets World Record for Box Office Opening

The animated film 'Zootopia 2', produced by Disney, has grossed $556 million in its opening weekend worldwide. This is the most successful opening for an animated film in history. Variety reports.

In the domestic box office in the U.S., 'Zootopia 2' earned $156 million across 4,000 locations starting November 26, with $96.8 million of that collected during the extended Thanksgiving weekend. According to Variety, these figures represent the second-largest Thanksgiving opening in the history of the country's box office, surpassed only by 'Moana 2', which grossed $225 million over the five-day weekend in 2024.

The remaining $400 million of 'Zootopia 2's earnings came from international markets, with $272 million from China.

With a total of $556 million in worldwide box office revenue, 'Zootopia' achieved the fourth-best debut weekend in box office history. As noted by ABC News, this is also the most successful opening for an animated film in history.

The first 'Zootopia' film was released in March 2016 and became a hit, grossing $341 million in the U.S. and $1.02 billion worldwide. The main characters of the film are police rabbit Judy (Ginnifer Goodwin) and con artist fox Nick (Jason Bateman).
