The increase in the retirement age will be inevitable — this opinion was expressed in the TV24 program "Preses klubs" by Professor Henrijs Kālķis from the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Latvia, as reported by nra.lv.
And this is not just a problem for Latvia — in Europe, America, and many countries around the world, the necessity of raising the retirement age is being discussed, as life expectancy increases, the quality of life for people has improved in recent years, and even in Western Europe, it is no longer believed that reaching retirement age simply means receiving a pension and living comfortably.
People are now looking at this from a more long-term perspective, trying to understand how they can develop to maintain their employability and be full members of society, balancing both social activity and leisure. This is how society is changing overall, explained Kālķis.
"And I think it will be inevitable — considering all economic factors, the retirement age will have to be raised," Kālķis said.
If we look at reality objectively — people are living longer, maintaining their employability longer, and many will want to continue working. This has been studied by several professors at a global level. But there are three questions: can I work, am I capable of doing it, and do other colleagues accept this, as often these individuals have invaluable work experience that can be passed on to others in a mentorship format. And if mental, physical, and social well-being is formed in this way, then, in the professor's opinion, this is a very correct direction, as any person possessing these three components will be both a full member of society and contribute to the economy.
