Romania Does Not Know What to Do with Russian Refineries and a Hundred Gas Stations

The Romanian authorities do not know who will buy the assets of the Russian company Lukoil in the country after US sanctions. This was stated by the President of Romania Nicuşor Dan.

Nicuşor Dan noted that there is a special working group at the government level dealing with the issue of Lukoil's assets in Romania. This concerns a refinery and about 100 gas stations. The refinery is currently closed for technical work and is expected to resume oil processing in a few weeks.

"As you can see, the fact that it is stopped does not affect supplies – but in the medium and long term, if processing were to stop there, we would have to import more," the president noted.

"There is also an option that requires special regulatory frameworks, so that for a limited period of time it could be taken under the control of the Romanian state," the president added.

According to him, there is no risk that Lukoil's assets will be bought by a company with Russian ties, because strategic company transactions are evaluated by a special commission.

"If we see that the candidate company has connections with the Russian Federation, or is under sanctions, or there are suspicions that this company does not actually intend to be an investor and is just a 'front' – then Romania has the right of veto," noted the president's advisor Radu Burnet.
