Inflation in Latvia Accelerated: Prices for Food and Housing Increased

Consumer prices in Latvia in October of this year increased by 0.4% compared to September, and on a year-on-year basis – compared to October 2024 – increased by 4.3%. A month earlier, the annual inflation was 4.1%, according to data from the Central Statistical Bureau, reported LETA.

At the same time, the average level of consumer prices over the past 12 months compared to the previous 12 months increased by 3.6% in October.

In October 2025, compared to September, the greatest impact on price growth was from goods and services related to housing, primarily thermal energy. At the same time, alcoholic beverages and tobacco products, personal hygiene products and cosmetics, clothing and footwear became cheaper.

The most significant influence on the change in the price level in October 2025 compared to September 2025 came from: goods and services related to housing (+0.3 percentage points), transport (+0.2 p.p.), food and non-alcoholic beverages (+0.1 p.p.), housing arrangements (+0.1 p.p.), as well as alcoholic beverages and tobacco products (-0.1 p.p.), various groups of goods and services (-0.1 p.p.), clothing and footwear (-0.04 p.p.).

Over the month, prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 0.5%.

The greatest impact on price growth in this group over the month came from fresh vegetables (+6.6%). As a result of the end of promotions, bread (+1.1%), cheese and cottage cheese (+1.4%), confectionery (+1.4%), milk (+1.3%), and ice cream (+2.4%) became more expensive. Fresh or chilled fish (+10.7%), coffee (+1.1%), and fresh fruits (+0.7%) also increased in price. Vegetable oil (-6.6%), pasta (-3.2%), and chocolate (-1.4%) became cheaper. Prices for pork (-1.6%), olive oil (-4.4%), and potatoes (-2.8%) also decreased.

The average price level for alcoholic beverages and tobacco products decreased by 1.6% over the month. Prices for alcoholic beverages fell by 2.3%, mainly due to promotions on strong alcohol and wine, while beer became more expensive. Prices for tobacco products decreased on average by 0.2%.

In the clothing and footwear group, prices decreased on average by 0.8%. Prices for footwear fell by 4.7%, while clothing became more expensive by 0.2%.

The average price level for goods and services related to housing increased by 1.6% over the month. The highest price increase in this group was recorded for thermal energy (+4.4%). Electricity (+1.5%), solid fuel (+2.6%), and waste disposal (+0.5%) also became more expensive. Housing management services became cheaper (-0.6%).

In the housing arrangement group, prices increased on average by 1.5% over the month. As a result of the end of promotions, cleaning and maintenance products for housing (+2.4%), home furniture (+2.2%), and bedding (+5.7%) became more expensive.

Goods and services related to transport became more expensive by 1.4% over the month, mainly due to the rise in prices for passenger air transport. Fuel prices increased by 0.8%, including diesel by 0.8%, gasoline by 1.1%, while autogas became cheaper by 0.4%. Maintenance and repair of personal vehicles, as well as passenger transport on roads, also became more expensive.

In the group of various goods and services, prices decreased by 1.2% over the month. Mainly, personal hygiene products and cosmetics became cheaper due to the end of promotions. At the same time, prices for jewelry increased, partly due to the end of discounts.

In other consumption groups, the most noticeable price increases over the month were for medical specialist services, works of fiction, and catering services. Hotel services and pharmaceutical products became cheaper.

In turn, in October 2025 compared to October 2024, the greatest influence on the change in the average level of consumer prices was from food and non-alcoholic beverages (+1.5 percentage points), primarily due to the rise in prices for coffee, poultry meat, eggs, chocolate, confectionery, dried, salted or smoked meat, butter, and milk. Goods and services related to housing (+1.1 p.p.), transport (+0.3 p.p.), and healthcare (+0.3 p.p.) also had a significant impact.

In the food and non-alcoholic beverages group, prices increased by 5.6% over the year.

The greatest influence on the rise in the average price level in this group over the year was coffee (+35.3%). Prices for poultry meat (+18.3%), eggs (+21%), chocolate (+18.2%), confectionery (+5.8%), dried, salted or smoked meat (+3.2%), butter (+11.3%), and milk (+5.6%) also increased. Prices for dairy products (+4.1%), beef (+28.3%), vegetable oil (+11.6%), fresh fruits (+2.3%), cheese and cottage cheese (+1.8%), fruit and vegetable juices (+6.1%), ice cream (+5.7%), and yogurt (+4.7%) also rose. Fresh vegetables (-7.1%), olive oil (-11.3%), sugar (-6.9%), fresh or chilled fish (-5.8%), as well as flour and other grain products (-2.5%) became cheaper.

The average price level for alcoholic beverages and tobacco products increased by 2.4% over the year. Prices for tobacco products rose on average by 9.4%. At the same time, alcohol became cheaper by 1.2%, mainly due to the decrease in prices for strong alcohol and beer.

The average price level for goods and services related to housing increased by 6.2% over the year. The highest increase over the year was recorded for electricity (+12.2%). Housing management services (+7.5%), natural gas (+10.9%), thermal energy (+1.8%), housing maintenance and repair services (+12.4%), housing rent (+6.7%), water supply (+6.6%), sewage (+8.8%), and waste disposal (+5.1%) also became more expensive. At the same time, solid fuel became cheaper (-3.8%).

In the healthcare group, the average price level increased by 4% over the year. Prices for medical specialist services, dental services, laboratory medical analysis services, and radiological center services, as well as pharmaceutical products, became more expensive.

Prices for goods and services related to transport increased by 2.6% over the year, mainly due to the rise in prices for passenger air transport (+12.8%) and fuel (+1.7%). Gasoline for cars became more expensive by 12.9%, diesel by 1.4%, and gasoline by 0.1%. Over the year, prices for other services for personal vehicles, their maintenance, and repair increased. Used cars became cheaper.

The average price level for restaurant and hotel services increased by 5.4% over the year. Catering services, including services from restaurants and cafes (+4.5%), canteens (+6.1%), and fast food establishments (+7.7%), also became more expensive. Hotel services (+5.9%) also increased in price.

In the group of various goods and services, the average price level increased by 4.5% over the year. Personal hygiene products and cosmetics, fees for accommodation in nursing homes, jewelry, as well as services from hairdressers and beauty salons became more expensive. Car insurance became cheaper.

In other consumption groups, the highest price increases over the year were recorded for telecommunications services, clothing, subscription fees for television, preschool and higher education, as well as leisure and sports services. At the same time, flowers became cheaper.
