Things are really bad: Nissan sold its headquarters in Yokohama

The Japanese automotive company Nissan announced the sale of its headquarters in Yokohama for 97 billion yen (approximately $630 million), reports Nikkei.

The buyer will be a specially created company MJI with the participation of the American investment fund KKR and the Taiwanese automotive parts manufacturer Minth Group (the main investor).

Nissan will use a sale-and-leaseback scheme, meaning it will sell the building but continue to rent it for the next 20 years. This will allow employees to continue working in the same office that became the company's headquarters after the move from Tokyo in 2009.

The sale of the office is part of measures to overcome the financial crisis at Nissan.

Many of the company's models have not been updated for years and have become outdated. For example, the Nissan Leaf, which was a pioneer in electric mobility, is now falling behind competitors in technology and range.

Since the scandalous dismissal of Carlos Ghosn in 2018, the company has been suffering from management instability. As of April 2025, Ivan Espinosa became the CEO of Nissan.

For the financial year that ended in March, the company reported losses of about $5 billion. In May, it became known that the company plans to lay off 20,000 workers.
