The joint-stock company "Pasažieru vilciens" (PV) transported 16.2 million passengers over the nine months of 2025, which is 11% more than in the same period last year, the company informed the LETA agency.
The company reported that there has been a sharp increase in the number of passengers on electrified railway lines over the nine months of 2025. For instance, on the Skulte direction, 16% more passengers were transported than in the same period last year. The highest number of passengers, 5.9 million people, was served on the Tukums direction, which is 11% more than in the nine months of 2024.
In September of this year, compared to August, the number of passengers increased on the Aizkraukle and Jelgava directions. The company notes that starting from September 22 of this year, six new services are operating on the Jelgava line during peak hours on working days.
On the non-electrified railway lines, the number of passengers increased by 14% on the Sigulda direction and by 7% on the Daugavpils direction over the nine months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. The company also notes that on the Lugazi-Valga route, where the departure and arrival times of several services have been coordinated with further trains to Tallinn since February, the number of passengers has more than doubled since the beginning of the year.
The punctuality of trains (a measure confirming how many services were completed according to the train schedule) for the nine months of 2025 was 98.6%.
The company reported that over 2,500 unified Riga tickets were sold in September of this year, which can be used for travel on passenger trains as well as for transport on "Rīgas satiksme". Almost half of the unified tickets were purchased by passengers on the Tukums line, nearly a quarter by passengers on the Skulte line, 15% by passengers on the Jelgava line, and 12% by passengers on the Aizkraukle line.
PV also reminds that an interval schedule is gradually being introduced on railway routes - trains will run at regular intervals, for example, every 15 or 30 minutes. Additionally, the passenger infrastructure is being optimized - the state-owned company "Latvijas dzelzceļš" (LDz) is restructuring passenger platforms.
In the nine months of last year, PV transported 14.5 million passengers.
As reported, a total of 19.445 million passengers were transported by rail in Latvia last year, which is 13.5% more than in 2023, and also 5.3% more than before the pandemic, in 2019.
