As reported by bb.lv, chocolate has become one of the most expensive products in the standard assortment of Latvian supermarkets. Over the past year, the price of chocolate in Latvia has increased by 24 percent.

And now it has happened. The decline in cocoa has put an end to the dramatic two-year rise that led to record highs in the market and put pressure on chocolate manufacturers worldwide, the publication noted.

This week, cocoa traded on the New York exchange at around $6150 per ton, compared to more than $12,000 during the price peak in December 2024. Prices in London, which nearly tripled in the early months of 2024, have now decreased by about 58% compared to the peak of $4262 in April last year.

The sharp rise in prices was previously attributed to dry weather, diseases, and years of insufficient investment by farmers in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana, which together produce about 60% of the world's cocoa.

The harvest for 2025-2026 is expected to lead to an oversupply compared to global demand, the publication writes.

Governments have also sharply increased the subsidies they pay to farmers, which is expected to stimulate supply. Ahead of the elections, Côte d'Ivoire raised its guaranteed rate by more than 25% to about $5000 per ton, while the Ghanaian government raised it to around $4600.

What about chocolate prices?

Despite the recent sharp decline in the market, retail prices for chocolate remain high. In the Netherlands, according to Rabobank, the average 100-gram bar cost 35% more in September this year compared to the previous year.

Consumers can expect that the price increases will stop, but they will not start to decrease for at least six months, said Jonathan Parkman, a representative of the brokerage firm Marex.
