Nina is a female name of unclear etymology. It may have come to Russia from Georgia (where it is pronounced as Nino), but it has an older origin and, according to one version, translates as "queen."
Also, "Nina" is a shortened form of several names (Antonina, Ninelle, etc.), including not only female but also male names (Saturnin).
Nin ("lady") is an element of the names of goddesses and gods in the Sumerian language, particularly from which some epithets of Inanna begin. Herodotus transmits the name of the city Nineveh, the capital of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, as Ninos.
In the Armenian language, it corresponds to — Նունէ [Nunē], and in the Georgian variant — ნინო [Nino]. Saint Nina (Nino), the enlightener of Georgia, is venerated in all Orthodox churches, but has always been particularly popular in the South Caucasus. In pre-revolutionary Russia, the name was rarely found among Russian women (although it was mentioned in the Saints' Lives), and the rise in popularity of the name is associated with the period of Stalin's rule, who was of Georgian nationality, although the specific reasons for this popularity are unclear.
