The first round of direct negotiations between the U.S. and Iran has concluded in Switzerland. Mediators from Qatar and Pakistan reported "significant progress" and a constructive atmosphere, and the parties agreed to continue working on an agreement planned to be prepared within the next 60 days.

The first round of negotiations between the United States and Iran has concluded at the Swiss resort complex of Bürgenstock. The meeting was mediated by Qatar and Pakistan, which reported a "positive and constructive atmosphere" and noted encouraging progress, according to NOS.

According to a joint statement from the mediators, the parties confirmed their intention to prepare a final agreement within 60 days. A preliminary plan for further negotiations has already been developed to achieve this goal.

The American delegation was led by U.S. Vice President Jay D. Vance. Iran was represented by Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi. Meanwhile, groups of experts and lower-level negotiators will remain in Switzerland for the entire following week to work on the agreements reached.

One of the first practical outcomes of the negotiations was the establishment of a direct communication channel between Washington and Tehran to prevent incidents and misunderstandings in the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world's most important oil supply routes.

Additionally, the parties agreed to work together with Lebanon to facilitate the cessation of hostilities in the country. This agreement became part of a basic accord that the U.S. and Iran signed a week earlier. Israel, which is engaged in combat against the Iran-backed group Hezbollah, did not participate in the negotiations and is not included in the de-escalation mechanism being created.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that significant progress had been made in the negotiations regarding the cessation of conflict in Lebanon. He described the mechanism being established to monitor compliance with the agreements as "the first real test" for both sides.

According to Araqchi, the United States also lifted the blockade on Iranian ports and unblocked some Iranian assets. There has been no official confirmation of this information from Washington so far.

The main sticking point in the negotiations remains the situation in Lebanon. On the eve of the meeting, Tehran expressed dissatisfaction with the ongoing hostilities, which delayed the start of negotiations by nearly a day. Against the backdrop of escalating tensions, the Strait of Hormuz was temporarily closed to shipping again.

U.S. President Donald Trump previously warned that Iran must take control of its allies in Lebanon, particularly Hezbollah; otherwise, Tehran could face new military threats from Washington.

Despite reports from some Iranian media about a possible withdrawal of the delegation from the negotiation process, it later became known that consultations continued in a working mode.

The first round of negotiations between the U.S. and Iran concluded with cautious optimism. Although the parties still diverge on several key issues, including the situation in Lebanon and regional security, the mere fact of continued dialogue and the establishment of direct communication mechanisms indicates a desire to avoid further escalation and find a diplomatic solution to the accumulated problems.
