The successor is already almost clear.
Starmer may announce his resignation as early as tomorrow, British media report. According to them, pressure on the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom within his Labour Party is growing, and on June 22, Keir Starmer may announce the timeline for his departure. The reasons cited include the personal unpopularity of the current head of government, as well as the recent political blows he has faced.
On June 11, Defense Secretary Jon Healey resigned. He criticized the Prime Minister and the Treasury for their unwillingness to allocate enough money for defense. Another significant blow for Starmer was the decisive victory in the parliamentary by-election in the Makerfield constituency, achieved by Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham over the candidate from the right-wing populist party Reform UK.
"For Labour MPs, desperate to find a way to counter Nigel Farage's party, a leadership contender has now emerged," writes the BBC.
Burnham is considered the most likely next leader of the Labour Party and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The candidacy of former Health Secretary Wes Streeting is also being discussed.
