France, together with its allies, has detained a tanker in the Atlantic Ocean linked to the Russian 'shadow fleet'. French President Emmanuel Macron stated that such vessels help circumvent sanctions and finance the war against Ukraine.

France has announced the detention of another vessel believed to be part of the Russian 'shadow fleet'. According to French President Emmanuel Macron, the tanker Tagor was stopped on Sunday morning in international waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

The operation involved not only French services but also Paris's allies, including the United Kingdom.

Macron emphasized that the actions were aimed at countering schemes to circumvent international sanctions. He stated that the use of such vessels allows for the continued export of Russian oil and petroleum products in violation of imposed restrictions.

"It is unacceptable for vessels to circumvent international sanctions, violate maritime law, and finance the war that Russia has been waging against Ukraine for more than four years," said the French president.

The so-called 'shadow fleet' typically refers to vessels with complex ownership structures, opaque registration, and insurance, which are used to transport Russian energy resources after the imposition of Western sanctions.

In recent months, European countries have noticeably increased control over such shipments.

What is important to know: this is not the first such case for France. Since September, French authorities have detained three other vessels also linked to the Russian 'shadow fleet'. After paying fines, the owners of these vessels were subsequently allowed to continue their voyages.

The detention of Tagor comes amid growing attention from European states to maritime routes for the supply of Russian oil.

EU countries and their partners are trying to limit the possibilities of circumventing the sanctions regime that has been in place since the start of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine.

It has not yet been reported what further measures will be taken regarding the detained tanker and its owners. However, the very fact of the detention shows that control over the activities of the 'shadow fleet' is becoming increasingly stringent, and the number of such operations in European waters continues to rise.
