No to the Olympics! 54.9% of Hamburg residents voted against the city bidding to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036, 2040, or 2044 in a referendum. Only 45.1% of voters supported the idea of such a bid - these figures are provided on the city's election data portal.
The voter turnout for the referendum was 49.5% - out of approximately 1.3 million eligible voters aged 16 and older, 648,445 people cast their votes. This is the second defeat for supporters of hosting the Games in Hamburg - in 2015, residents also opposed the bid (then the negative response in the referendum was 51.6%, with 48.4% in favor).
"I deeply regret the results of the vote," said Mayor Peter Tschentscher, adding that the results of the referendum are binding for the authorities.
On September 26, the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) will decide which candidate it will choose to participate in the international tender - Berlin, Munich, or the Rhine-Ruhr region, reports Deutsche Welle.
