Poland and Britain to Sign New Defense Agreement Against Threats from Russia

Poland wants to elevate its relationship with the United Kingdom to the highest possible level in order to effectively counter Russian threats.

Poland wants to elevate its relationship with the United Kingdom to the highest possible level in order to effectively counter Russian threats.

On Wednesday, May 27, the United Kingdom and Poland will sign a new defense and security agreement in London aimed at protection against Russia. This was announced by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, according to Reuters.

Tusk reminded that Warsaw had previously signed global defense and security agreements with France and Germany. Now, the Polish side expects to sign a similar agreement with the United Kingdom.

According to Tusk, Poland aims to elevate its relationship with London to the highest possible level. The parties will jointly counter Russian threats, including hybrid ones.

The United Kingdom and Poland, in particular, will jointly develop the defense industry and will design a new generation medium-range surface-to-air missile. Additionally, they will strengthen cooperation in the field of cybersecurity.

"History teaches us that we (i.e., Poland – ed.) must forge reliable alliances. Our geographical position teaches us the same. Alliances are meant to deter the aggressive ambitions of other states," Tusk said.

The new agreement between Poland and the United Kingdom will be part of the strengthening cooperation among European countries in the field of defense amid rising tensions in relations with Russia. Warsaw continues to strengthen its system of alliances, focusing on collective security and the development of military technologies.
