The attempt by U.S. authorities to bring charges against former head of the Communist Party of Cuba Raul Castro has no legal basis, said Cuban President Miguel
"This is a political act without any legal basis and aimed solely at strengthening a fabricated case designed to justify reckless aggression against Cuba," he wrote on Wednesday on social media platform X.
According to the President of Cuba, the United States lies and manipulates facts related to the events of 1996, when Cubans shot down two planes belonging to a humanitarian organization founded by Cuban expatriates in the U.S. At the same time, Diaz-Canel noted that Washington is well aware that there were no violations of international law on the Cuban side at that time; on the contrary, Cuba acted in legitimate self-defense.
Earlier, American media reported that U.S. authorities officially filed criminal charges against Raul Castro. It is believed that the case is related to the 1996 incident, which resulted in the deaths of four people.
The escalation of the situation occurs against the backdrop of increased pressure from the Donald Trump administration on Cuba. In recent months, Washington has significantly tightened its sanctions and economic policy towards the island.
In the editorial's opinion, the conflict surrounding the accusations against Raul Castro could further complicate relations between the U.S. and Cuba. Both sides are increasingly using harsh rhetoric, and the political confrontation is gradually returning to the levels of the most tense periods of the Cold War.
