The candidacy of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel is increasingly being discussed as a mediator with Russia.
In Europe, there is a discussion about the possibility of appointing former German Chancellor Angela Merkel to the role of mediator in negotiations with Russia. This information was published by the publication Spiegel, citing its sources.
As noted by the publication, Merkel is considered one of the most optimal candidates for this mission due to her previous experience communicating with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian leader Vladimir Putin. It is mentioned that the former chancellor has not been actively engaged in political activities for a long time, which may contribute to her neutrality in the negotiation process.
Debates regarding the format of negotiations with the Kremlin continue among European Union countries, especially due to the negative experience of mediation by the United States. The EU aims to ensure direct participation in possible dialogues with Russia. However, this issue remains quite complex, as European countries express different positions on such a strategy.
Although the Kremlin had previously suggested involving former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder in the negotiation process, this option did not receive support in the European Union. In particular, Kaja Kallas, a representative of the EU, stated that Russia should not independently determine the candidate for the negotiator.
At the same time, Wolfgang Ischinger, head of the Munich Security Conference, emphasized the need for broad support for a potential mediator among EU countries, especially in Eastern Europe and the Baltic states.
Journalists reached out to Angela Merkel's office regarding her possible participation in the negotiations. They were informed that at the moment the former chancellor has not received any official invitations to take on such a mission, and the question of her readiness for this role remains unanswered.
The European Union continues to search for a figure who could become an acceptable mediator for all parties involved in the negotiations, writes bb.lv. However, the question remains open: EU countries assess the prospects for dialogue with Moscow differently, and Angela Merkel has not yet officially confirmed her willingness to participate in such a mission.
