Ukraine wants to conclude an 'airport truce' with Russia and is counting on the help of the European Union.
The idea of a mutual refusal to strike airports in the Russian Federation and Ukraine was voiced by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga during a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
According to the minister, Kyiv "probably needs a new role for Europe" in the peace negotiations, as the diplomatic process under the auspices of the United States has slowed down.
"Perhaps we will try to resolve or achieve what is called an 'airport truce,'" Sibiga stated.
According to Kyiv's plan, both sides of the conflict would have to refrain from strikes on airports or strikes that threaten air traffic. Sibiga expressed the opinion that European partners could create a separate platform or special group to discuss such a truce format. He noted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had already discussed this idea with some European leaders.
From May 9 to May 11, a three-day ceasefire was in effect in the area of the special military operation, announced by U.S. President Donald Trump and supported by Kyiv and Moscow.
