Berlin has resumed negotiations with Washington for the purchase of American Tomahawk cruise missiles and Typhon launchers. The authorities of the Federal Republic of Germany view these systems as an important element of deterring Russia and are willing to increase spending to finalize the deal.
The authorities of the Federal Republic of Germany are once again trying to secure the purchase of American Tomahawk cruise missiles after the Pentagon abandoned the idea of deploying an American battalion armed with such systems in Germany. This information was obtained by the Financial Times (FT) from sources familiar with Berlin's strategy.
According to the publication, German authorities hope to convince the administration of President Donald Trump to sell Germany not only Tomahawk missiles but also Typhon ground launchers. In Berlin, these systems are viewed as a tool for "deterring Russia."
"Berlin is renewing its efforts to acquire American Tomahawk cruise missiles. The German government hopes to persuade the Trump administration to agree to the sale of Tomahawk along with Typhon launchers," the sources said.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius intends to travel to Washington to resume negotiations on the procurement of long-range weapons. One of the FT's interlocutors reported that the offer to acquire such systems was sent by Germany as early as July 2025, but no response has been received from the U.S.
At the same time, the source did not rule out that the meeting could fall through due to deteriorating relations between President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Another source from the publication believes that Berlin is likely willing to pay more for Tomahawk than Japan and the Netherlands, which are already awaiting deliveries of these missiles.
"Berlin may be willing to pay more to ensure the purchase," the publication stated.
The article notes that currently there are no ready-to-use long-range ground missile systems in Europe.
Germany continues to enhance its military capabilities and is seeking to acquire long-range missile systems from the U.S., writes bb.lv. Against the backdrop of rising tensions in Europe, Berlin aims to strengthen its own defense capabilities and reduce dependence on the deployment of American weapons on its territory.
