A Civil Guard officer involved in the evacuation of passengers from the cruise liner MV Hondius, where a hantavirus outbreak occurred, has died in Spain. The death of the officer was reported by the head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
On the evening of May 10, a Spanish Civil Guard officer who participated in the evacuation of passengers from the cruise liner MV Hondius during a hantavirus outbreak passed away.
"This officer was involved in the operation of the Spanish authorities, conducted in coordination with the WHO, aimed at the safe evacuation of people from the MV Hondius vessel at the port of Puerto de Granadilla in southern Tenerife to the airport for repatriation," he wrote on social media.
Emergency service workers at the dock immediately began resuscitation procedures; however, despite all efforts, they were unable to save the individual.
Hantavirus is an acute viral infection spread by rodents. The disease can manifest in severe forms, affecting the lungs or kidneys. The authorities in the Netherlands have already been informed of the situation and are preparing for the arrival of the vessel. The Embassy of the Russian Federation continues to monitor the situation and maintains contact with the Russian citizen. Once the liner arrives at the port and all necessary sanitary measures are completed, the Russian national will be able to leave the MV Hondius.
Previously, strict quarantine measures were imposed in Madrid for the cruise ship MV Hondius, where a hantavirus outbreak was detected. Spain's Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, ordered that all vessels stay at least one nautical mile away from the liner as soon as it enters the waters of the Canary Islands.
The situation surrounding the MV Hondius continues to raise serious concerns among authorities and international organizations, bb.lv reports. Spain maintains strict sanitary restrictions, and specialists continue to monitor the condition of passengers and crew to prevent further spread of the dangerous infection.
