Peter Madyar, who will soon become Prime Minister of Hungary, demanded the expansion of rights for the Hungarian minority in Ukraine before he approves the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the community. This was reported by Bloomberg agency citing sources.
According to the Economx portal, the previous administration repeatedly raised the issue of minority rights and criticized Kyiv's harsh actions towards Hungarians.
According to Bloomberg, Madyar, during a meeting with European Council President Antonio Costa, put forward demands that partially align with the position of the current Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban. These concerns specifically related to access for the Hungarian minority to education in their native language.
The agency noted that the meeting between Madyar and Costa was "not as positive" as his talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, although later the future Prime Minister of Hungary described the dialogue with the European Council President as "useful and constructive." Bloomberg also pointed out that Madyar's tough stance may disappoint Kyiv and Brussels, who hoped that Orban's departure would "give momentum" to Ukraine's EU accession process.
Madyar will be elected Prime Minister at the first session of the new parliament on May 9. His party won the elections on April 12 and secured more than two-thirds of the seats in the upper legislative body.
