The U.S. is developing new nuclear weapons for destroying bunkers — TWZ
The U.S. Department of Energy has requested nearly $100 million for new developments, including nuclear weapons designed to target underground bunkers — the Nuclear Deterrent System-Air-delivered (NDS-A), reports The War Zone. The request is included in the budget for the 2027 fiscal year under the section "Emerging Programs."
The NDS-A system is intended to replace the only existing nuclear weapon of this class in the U.S. arsenal — the B61-11 gravity bomb, with a maximum yield of 340 to 400 kilotons. Their stockpiles at the Pentagon are limited, according to the portal "Duty Officer in America."
"The NDS-A will provide the president with additional nuclear options for striking hardened and deeply buried targets, ensuring that adversaries cannot move their most valuable assets beyond the reach of U.S. nuclear forces," stated a representative of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).
Additional information will become publicly available when it is strategically advantageous for the U.S., the NNSA added.
