CENTCOM announced the launch of Operation 'Freedom' to escort commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. The mission will involve destroyers, over 100 aircraft, and approximately 15,000 service members.
According to the statement: "On May 4, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) will begin supporting Operation 'Freedom' with the aim of restoring freedom of navigation for commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz." Central Command notes that it will carry out the mission at the direction of U.S. President Donald Trump, "and will support commercial vessels seeking to transit freely through this important corridor of international trade." The U.S. military support for Operation 'Freedom' will include guided missile destroyers, more than 100 ground and sea-based aircraft, multi-role unmanned platforms, and 15,000 service members. The operation may escalate tensions in the region: Tehran has already stated that it will consider U.S. intervention as a violation of the ceasefire, reports bb.lv. The situation surrounding this key trade route remains extremely sensitive and could impact global security and energy resource supplies.
