When Will the U.S. Attack Cuba? Experts' Opinion

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of using military force against the Cuban authorities, but is still primarily focusing on diplomatic methods.

Politico reports, citing a source familiar with the White House's position.

According to the publication, Washington is discussing the option of using "kinetic force," while simultaneously trying to obtain economic concessions from Havana. This includes the privatization of state enterprises, expanding internet access, attracting foreign investments, as well as purchasing American energy resources. The source notes that the U.S. is prepared to seek changes gradually, not necessarily insisting on an immediate change of power.

The administration's position is also influenced by domestic politics. The Cuban diaspora in Florida, a significant portion of which supports Trump, is increasing pressure on the White House for tough measures against the Cuban authorities. At the same time, the Politico interlocutor describes this factor as a "double-edged sword," noting that pressure on the regime has been ongoing for decades and does not always yield results.

In recent months, Trump has repeatedly stated plans to address Cuba after completing military operations against Iran. He has suggested the possibility of quickly establishing control over the island and has signed an order imposing new sanctions against Cuban officials. According to media reports, the Pentagon is also considering military action scenarios in case of a corresponding decision by the president.

Earlier, Donald Trump, speaking in Florida, jokingly suggested that the U.S. could "virtually immediately" establish control over the island, including using an aircraft carrier. These comments came amid the expansion of sanctions against the Cuban authorities and discussions of further steps by Washington in the region.
