The U.S. is inviting other countries to join a new international coalition to restore the unhindered passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing the U.S. State Department.
"The initiative, called the 'Maritime Freedom Construct' (MFC), was outlined in a telegram for internal use by the U.S. State Department sent to embassies on Tuesday; it contains a call for American diplomats to urge foreign governments to join the initiative," the publication reports.
According to the source, the new coalition led by the U.S. will exchange intelligence, coordinate diplomatic efforts, and ensure compliance with sanctions.
"Collective action is necessary to demonstrate unity, resolve, and impose significant costs on Iran, which is obstructing transit through the strait," the document states.
The mission is expected to be launched jointly by the State Department and the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).
