The World Order Has Collapsed: How the War in Ukraine Changed the Global Balance of Power

Russia's invasion of Ukraine not only violated international law, it became a catalyst for the complete collapse of the previous world order. Learn how this event reshaped the global political map.

The adventurous war waged by Donald Trump against Iran is a direct consequence of the so-called "Putin effect." The old world order, which was based on international law, definitively ceased to exist in February 2022, giving way to the law of force. This is stated in an op-ed for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung by the editor-in-chief of the publication, international observer Eric Gujer.

The journalist notes that against the backdrop of serious economic consequences for the region and the entire world from the two-month Middle Eastern conflict, many still do not understand the true reasons why Trump initiated this war in the first place, as there seems to be no obvious benefit to it.

"The U.S. started the war because no foreign state could stop them. Neither Russia, nor China, and certainly not the toothless Europeans. No one could stop America’s attack. What sounds so simple has far-reaching and alarming consequences," Gujer explains.

The observer is convinced that the current conflict in the Middle East is not an isolated event, but merely part of a large-scale global transition from the old world order, where the U.S. dominated after the collapse of the USSR, to a multipolar world with several opposing power blocs. As obvious centers of power in the new world, the journalist names the U.S., China, Russia, India, and the EU, emphasizing that the previous principles of coexistence no longer work.

"This is the Putin effect. No one was strong and decisive enough in 2022 to stop his invasion of Ukraine," the author of the publication emphasizes. Gujer is convinced that this "pentarchy," or rivalry among five dominant states, will bring significant risks to the world.

In particular, wars similar to those ongoing in Ukraine and the Persian Gulf will become "more the rule than the exception" in the coming years. At the same time, the journalist does not believe that this confrontation will escalate into a global war like the first two world wars. According to Gujer, conflicts will remain regional, even if their consequences are felt worldwide.

However, the author of the publication seems to overlook the fact that both World War I and World War II began with relatively small border conflicts that quickly involved the entire planet.

Current Global Situation

As previously reported, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski expressed confidence that the peace agreement with Ukraine on behalf of the Russian Federation would not be signed by Putin, but by someone else who would remove him from office. It has also become known that Europe is actively trying to create its own NATO equivalent, which will not include the U.S. This is due to the fact that it is already clear: the U.S. is no longer a reliable ally for Europeans.
