Thousands Celebrate Cannabis Day in New York City

Mass celebrations of 420 took place in New York City — the unofficial day of cannabis culture, which is annually celebrated by marijuana legalization supporters. The main festivities unfolded in Washington Square Park and Tompkins Square Park.

Crowds of participants gathered with music, street performances, and a festive atmosphere. Many smoked marijuana and referred to April 20 as the main day for cannabis enthusiasts. One attendee stated that it is "essentially New Year’s for everyone who smokes."

According to local media reports, in 2026, some of the celebrants moved between two parks as police increased their presence in the Washington Square Park area. Law enforcement monitored public order and compliance with existing regulations.

In New York State, cannabis use by adults over 21 has been legal since 2021. Since then, attitudes toward marijuana in the city have noticeably changed, and such events have become more open and widespread.

At the same time, authorities remind that legalization does not eliminate restrictions on smoking in public places, so cannabis usage rules continue to apply even on the holiday.
