The man who carried out the shooting on Monday at the popular archaeological complex of Teotihuacan in Mexico was inspired by human sacrifices from the pre-Columbian era and the Columbine High School massacre in 1999, investigators reported on Tuesday, according to LETA citing AFP.
27-year-old Mexican Julio Cesar Hasso Ramirez shot and killed one tourist from Canada and injured 13 others during this shooting, after which he committed suicide by shooting himself.
State Prosecutor of Mexico Jose Luis Cervantes Martinez reported that Hasso Ramirez lived in Mexico City about 50 kilometers from the shooting site and "had previously visited this archaeological site many times, stayed in nearby hotels, and planned his acts of violence from there."
The preliminary investigation established a connection between the attack and the mass shooting that occurred exactly 27 years ago at Columbine High School in Colorado, USA.
"The evidence collected (...) reveals the psychopathic profile of the attacker, characterized by a tendency to copy situations that occurred in other places, at other times, and with other people," Cervantes stated at a press conference on Tuesday.
In the Columbine massacre in 1999, students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 12 students and one teacher, and injured another 20 people.
Mexican media reported that authorities found an AI-generated image among Hasso Ramirez's personal belongings, depicting him next to Harris and Klebold. During the attack, he was wearing a shirt similar to the one worn by both Columbine shooters.
Eyewitness accounts also indicate that the shooter was inspired by human sacrifices in pre-Columbian civilizations of America.
"One of the things he told us was that this place is for sacrifices, not for your little pictures (...) and that this is the anniversary of the Columbine massacre," said American tourist Jacqueline Gutierrez, who was visiting Teotihuacan with her parents and a friend on the day of the shooting.
She added that the shooter also claimed to have planned the attack for three years.
Investigators believe that the shooting was carried out by one person who had no accomplices. Among his belongings, "literature on attacks and individuals associated with this type of violence" was found, the prosecutor reported.
