Russia is preparing for a confrontation with NATO

Intelligence analysts predicted a grim future for the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance.

After the end of the war with Ukraine, Russia will need only a year to accumulate enough forces for a "regional conflict" with the North Atlantic Alliance. This is stated in the report of the Dutch Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIVD) for 2025. The agency believes that Russia will seek to divide NATO and achieve "limited territorial gains," and that the Kremlin will be prepared to use nuclear weapons as a form of blackmail, writes Deutsche Welle.

The ongoing war in Ukraine since 2022 is considered by MIVD to be "part of Russia's long-term ambition to fundamentally change the security architecture of Europe and the international order." The authors of the report also note the "unpredictable" security policy of the current U.S. administration, which "may affect the analysis of the cost-benefit ratio for Russia."

At the same time, according to Dutch intelligence, Russia is actively using new technologies, such as AI, to pressure other countries in order to instill fear, influence decision-making, and create favorable conditions for the initiation of hostilities. "As a result, there is a real risk of unintended and therefore difficult-to-control escalation," MIVD notes.
