The Pechersk District Court of Kyiv has arrested 27-year-old Mykhailo Drobnytsky, one of the two patrol police officers who left the scene during the shooting in Kyiv on Saturday, reports TSN, citing LETA referring to Meduza.
Drobnytsky has been arrested for two months — until June 18.
In court, the police officer explained that he retreated when shots were fired at him during the attack.
"A man came out with an automatic weapon and started shooting at me. I began to retreat, as I was in an open area, to find cover. As I was retreating, shots were fired at me," Drobnytsky said.
"When I found cover, I began to act to locate and neutralize the attacker. I deeply regret what happened; I replay this in my mind every day," the police officer said.
On Saturday in Kyiv, a man armed with a carbine opened fire on passersby and then took refuge in a store, where he continued shooting. The attacker killed seven people.
The attacker himself was neutralized during his arrest.
After the shooting, a video appeared online showing two police officers fleeing the scene during the shooting.
