An armed man opened fire on Monday in the popular archaeological complex of Teotihuacan in Mexico, shooting one tourist from Canada, authorities reported, according to LETA citing AFP and AP.

Another 13 people were injured as a result of the shooting.

After the attack, the shooter took his own life by shooting himself.

Videos on social media show the attacker firing intermittently as he approaches the top of the Pyramid of the Moon, while tourists seek shelter behind the lower steps.

Local authorities reported that six people sustained gunshot wounds, including citizens from Canada, Colombia, Brazil, and the United States. They were hospitalized.

Another seven people were injured in the fall, among them citizens from Colombia, Russia, Brazil, and the United States. They received medical assistance on site.

At the scene, security forces found firearms, ammunition, and a knife.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on her X account that federal and state security forces were dispatched to the scene, and her administration had contacted the government of Canada.

"What happened today in Teotihuacan deeply hurts us. I sincerely express my solidarity with the victims and their families," Sheinbaum wrote.

Teotihuacan, located on the outskirts of Mexico City, features pyramids built by three ancient civilizations. This archaeological complex is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Mexico, with over 1.8 million visitors last year.
