The number of crimes registered by the German police last year decreased overall, but there was an increase in murders and a number of other serious crimes.
This is stated in the statistics released on Monday, April 20, by the German Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Criminal Police Office. It is based on data from all 16 federal states.
According to this data, in 2025, there were 5,508,559 crimes recorded in Germany - 5.6% less than the previous year. For the first time since 2021, violent crime also decreased - by 2.3% year-on-year. Meanwhile, there has been a significant increase in a number of serious criminal offenses compared to 2024.
The number of crimes related to new psychoactive substances increased by 25.5%, and child pornography by 19.9%.
Cases of rape and serious sexual offenses increased by 8.5%, and murders by 6.5%.
There has also been an increase in cases of computer fraud and apartment burglaries.
The trends are alarming...
Experts link the overall decrease in crime rates to the partial legalization of cannabis in Germany in April 2024. The number of drug-related crimes fell by 27.7%, which significantly affected the overall statistics. Meanwhile, the clearance rate has hardly changed - 57.9% compared to 58% in 2024, reports Deutsche Welle.
