Amid growing anxiety, Chancellor Friedrich Merz is gathering the National Security Council to urgently address the critical situation regarding energy and fuel supplies in the country.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced an urgent meeting of the National Security Council. The upcoming meeting aims to comprehensively discuss the current situation regarding the energy and fuel supply of the country. This was reported by dpa, citing a statement from the head of the German government, conveyed to "European Truth."
Ensuring Critical Supplies
The main goal, according to Merz, is to guarantee uninterrupted supplies of key types of fuel. This includes diesel, gasoline, and aviation kerosene, which are necessary for the stable functioning of the economy.
He emphasized the seriousness of the situation but assured that resources are available: "The situation is tense, but supplies are secured. If conditions worsen, we are ready to take measures," the chancellor stated.
Role of the National Security Council
The National Security Council was formed by Merz's coalition government last year. Its primary task is to respond promptly to crisis situations and ensure national security.
The Council includes key representatives from the federal government and law enforcement agencies. If necessary, representatives from the federal states of Germany can also be involved in the work.
Merz stressed that maintaining the stability of supply chains remains a top priority. The government is ready to utilize "all available tools" to preserve this stability.
Measures and Warnings from the Minister of Economy
Earlier, Minister of Economy Katharina Reiche had already reported on the preparation of measures in case of a possible kerosene shortage. At the same time, she urged to avoid panic.
"Panic over kerosene will not help anyone," Reiche noted, adding that supply conditions vary significantly depending on market conditions.
The minister also reported that together with the Ministry of Transport, they invited industry representatives for negotiations. The meeting, scheduled for Monday, will bring together airports, airlines, and fuel suppliers to seek solutions.
Impact of Pricing Policy on Fuel
The German government has already implemented a rule allowing gas stations to raise prices only once a day. However, this measure has not yet led to a reduction in costs for motorists.
After the introduction of this policy last week, record price highs were recorded. This caused additional concern among consumers and experts.
