"CO2 Racketeering" - Estonia Demands to Abandon Emission Trading and Return to Shale Energy

The chairman of the Conservative People's Party of Estonia (EKRE), Martin Helme, stated in an interview with Põhjarannik that until the completion of the nuclear power plant, Estonia should focus on shale electricity and abandon emission trading and environmental fees that currently make shale power plants uncompetitive.

"We have once again submitted a bill to the Riigikogu, making it more precise than the previous one. It clearly states that all trading of CO2 emission quotas is excluded from Estonian legislation. We will not require our enterprises to purchase these quotas. This is not only about Estonia. Recently, Italy has been saying the same, and a similar proposal has been made in Poland. This entire CO2 racketeering has led the European economy to complete collapse," said Helme.

"But this is not the only reason. We also know that shale electricity is expensive due to other major environmental fees. If they are abolished, the cost of shale electricity will immediately become significantly lower," Helme continued.

Moreover, according to Helme, shale power plants cannot be constantly turned on and off. "This also increases the cost of electricity. It is believed that electricity is very cheap in summer due to wind. But if this cheap wind energy pushes shale out of the market, then in winter the latter becomes twice as expensive. Production must cover its fixed costs year-round. You cannot stop the mines in summer and lay off all the workers," Helme told Põhjarannik.

"We have no reasonable need for a large number of wind turbines and solar panels. In fact, it is more expensive than shale, even with subsidies. This energy is more unstable than shale and is also more harmful to the environment," Helme added.
